The word "apostle" in Greek signifies "one sent on a mission". Concerning the Apostles of Jesus this initially referred to the 12 apostles who were in Jesus's inner circle.

There was a time when Jesus sent out 70 of his disciples which by definition of an apostle being "one who is sent on a mission" also qualified as apostles.

However, all who Jesus sent out on a mission were first disciples. Thus the only apparent difference between a disciple who was an apostle and one who was not is the factor of being specifically sent by Jesus on a mission.

Hence, false apostles are those who claim to have been sent by Jesus when, in truth, He sent them not...they are then false embassadors and purveyors of poison/false doctrine.
